What’s Your Dream?
What was your dream job when you were a kid? If you were anything like me, then that dream included being a super-hero and savings the world. What about when you were a teenager, or even as you went down the list and applied at your most wanted colleges, did your vision for your “perfect” career stay the same or did it change?
There are many expectations of young people to have their whole lives figured out by the time they are 18. I, for one, had no business determining what the rest of my life looked like when I couldn’t focus any further than making sure table 19 had napkins, table 27 had their refills on water and tea and how my rent was going to be paid on the first of the month. Even as adults, why do we put so much focus and intention on just having a job, when we don’t dig deep enough to find our passion. It’s ok if you don’t have life perfectly mapped out by the time your 7. Some people wait and wait and wait for the right opportunity to land on their doorstep, as if it’s in this cute little box with a perfectly tied bow around and that says, “OPEN ME”. Why its it so many people wait until we are “ready” to do something? What stops us from having a little faith in ourselves and go out and create the opportunity? Sometimes you do have to take 5 steps back in order to move forward. It doesn’t matter if you’re 5, 25 or even 45. It’s ok to make a change, follow your heart, and know when you’re no longer able to make an impact in your current position so it’s time to move on. What does ready mean anyway? Being ready can be argued in so many ways. Is it financially, emotionally or physically ready? Do the stars have to align in just a certain formation and at that very same time does there have to be a meteor shower and your dog howls at the moon while you’re standing on one foot and patting your head for the time to be right? What imaginary scenario have you created for your “time to be right” to make your move? Someone I have great respect for once shared with me:
That one simple statement took all the fear and anxiety out of a decision and confirmed the bet I had made on myself. Stop allowing yourself to have this list of demands for perfect timing and just figure it out. The time will never be right to make a life-altering change. You are never going to have the right amount of anything as long as you allow yourself to believe your own narrative
Have you ever felt the energy you have when you are on a roll and on fire? Do you ever feel that natural high you have when you get off an amazing call or meeting that you know is going to make an immediate impact on someone?
You may never realize the impact you have on someone, and how that can touch countless lives because you are following your passion. My amazing wife is my biggest cheerleader and the rock that my foundation of success is built. When I was considering the biggest career move of my life over 13 years ago, she stood by me and we jumped in together. When recently we were considering another major career move, which frankly was the scariest choice I’ve ever made, she goes and redecorates my office and hangs these words on the wall.
“The World Needs Who You Were Made to Be.”

Stop waiting for the genie in a bottle to appear and grant you three wishes. Stop falling for the illusion that someday, your timing will be right, and the opportunity will appear out of thin air. Create your own path, add a little bit of faith (and maybe pixie dust) and blaze your own way.
