Make Everyday the Most Wonderful Time of the Year…
Daddy, are you done working? This is the most popular question in our household that our kids ask me nearly every day. That question arguably competes with what’s for breakfast, lunch, or dinner so that says a lot. There are few things in this world that touch the soul more than the little eyes of a child staring at you asking for you to spend more time with them. Obviously, there is only one correct answer from their perspective, yet rarely is that my actual response. I have two more calls to make or let me send this real quick is the typical response they get. Like most children, mine have very little sense of priorities as it relates to work time versus play time. There is never enough play time, recess is their favorite subject outside of lunch, and are you done working is my typical greeting when I see them for the first time after school. What I hear, however, is not when are you done working. What I hear is, “Will you spend time with me?
Time is the one constant that we all share in this world. Time is universal and has no emotion connected to whether or not you think you have enough or too little. It does not care if you are good using it effectively or the worlds worst manager. It ticks on moment by moment. I recently posted about dealing with anxiety and how my way is to remind myself that there is only ONE of today. Whatever the day, the month or the year, there has only ever been ONE of them in the history of mankind. How do you choose to spend it? Author Ben Horowitz, The Hard Thing About Hard Things said, he practices the first Principle of Bushido - The Way of the Warrior: Keep death in mind at all times and live as though each day might be your last. While that seems rather bleak, consider if we all had an infinite amount of time what would create any sense of urgency to live or experience life to its fullest?
“Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why we call it ‘The Present.’ - Eleanor Roosevelt
This holiday season, consider making each day the most wonderful time of the year. We don’t need more time, as its a universal currency. We simply need to be more awakened on where and with whom it is spent. Think of how much time is spent wasting energy on the unimportant versus who’s important. Be present and offer those around you the most precious gift that you have… your time. Happy Holidays with Love
